Jottings from the sempiternal discourse...

"Far from the vileness and filth, He observes,
The ancient Mother Earth, stripped bare,
Pristine glory, robbed and begged away,
By children She fed with her bosom,
He flies high, yet not detached,
Sharp eyes, cannot be turned away,
Visions of grandeur, lost and forgotten,
Bring tears to His ancient eyes,
That which was, will be, vows He,
Metamorphosis takes courage, that burns
As fire within, He roars to wake those,
Who sleep in blissful ignorance, The Griffin fights
Alone, to His majestic end..."

How Italian banks gamed the system in LTRO - 1…

About an hour before LTRO results, 5 Italian banks issued and bought their own bonds. Presumably after posting these to the ECB, they receive proceeds of the loans which they in turn need to pay off coupons and redemptions, estimated across European banks to total €230bn in Q1. What Italian banks figured out is how to print money out of thin air!

Beware the limerence, the relentless craving, the unremitting hesitation, the heart-ache of hope, the agony of anticipation and the rare gratification…

Me

We can never know what to want, because, living only one life, we can neither compare it with our previous lives nor perfect it in our lives to come.

― Milan Kundera

Anyone whose goal is ‘something higher’ must expect someday to suffer vertigo. What is vertigo? Fear of falling? No, Vertigo is something other than fear of falling. It is the voice of the emptiness below us which tempts and lures us, it is the desire to fall, against which, terrified, we defend ourselves.

― Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being

Scathing indictment of war-mongering journalism...

Media undoubtedly has a noticeable influence on politics and state policy. Not for nothing is it now referred to as ‘The Fourth Estate’. So it makes you wonder, how many wars fought in the past, could have been avoided if the radical, war-mongering, headline-hungry journalists had been muzzled…

Inspiring piece by Malcolm Gladwell about being an underdog and winning...

Apologize for sharing this rather lengthy article, but that’s Malcolm Gladwell’s typical writing style - oversimplification through examples and anecdotes.

Nonetheless it’s an interesting article that talks about changing the rules of the game to your benefit and winning by doing the unexpected. That’s how David beat Goliath, and that’s how the underdog can win.

Finally, superior ability cannot assure you a victory, ‘cause relentless effort trumps ability.
